Scottish Level 1 Coach (L1C)

Previously known as UKCC coach qualifications, we now have our own Scottish Coach Qualifications which are fully accredited by the SQA, and are comprehensive and practical courses relevant for coaching in a Scottish context.

This is a high quality coaching qualification for capable orienteers who have attended the Coaching Foundation course, and provides skills to run single sessions. Subsidies are usually available from sportscotland.

USUAL DURATION:

Approx. 6 hours home study, then 2 days of tuition and assessment

ASSESSMENT:

Merged with tuition days;  short written tasks and observed coaching delivery

COST:

£250 per person. Subsidy may be available from sportscotland; check your eligibility and apply via their website.

MAIN TOPICS:

Level 1 is the “Assistant Coach”, usually working with a more qualified coach though sometimes delivering a session alone after having received guidance from a more qualified coach. The focus of the Level 1 coach is the single session, usually progressing a skill within the session. Any progression from one session to the next would be under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach.

Training for Level 1 comprises some independent learning before the tuition and assessment. Most Level 1 courses assume learners have completed CF, in which case the tuition and assessment are completed over 2 days, usually a weekend. Occasionally a 3-day course is arranged, covering the full tuition, practice and assessment, as well as the independent learning beforehand.

PRE-REQUISITES:

• Attendance at Coaching Foundation course
• Participants must be aged 17 or over; evidence of competence at orienteering at TD4 or above
• Current member of British Orienteering
