World Orienteering Week events taking place across Scotland
World Orienteering Week runs from Wednesday 15th May to Tuesday 21st May and schools, clubs and groups across Scotland have registered “World Orienteering Day” events with the aim of breaking a world record and getting new people into the sport.
“World Orienteering Day” was started by the International Orienteering Federation in 2016 to raise the profile and participation in orienteering as a global sport, and has quickly grown to become a week of encouraging people of all ages to try orienteering. Last year, a record 349,000 people enjoyed orienteering events through the week and this year we’re aiming for more.
From Lanark’s Castlebank Park in the south to Evanton Woods, north of Inverness, people are embracing orienteering.
Near Glasgow there are events at Cathkin Braes & Tollcross, while east of Edinburgh, Neilson Park in Haddington and Prestongrange Mining Museum are joining in. In Edinburgh itself there are events at Bonaly plus daytime and evening events at Holyrood Park.
Heading north of the Forth there are events at Linlithgow Loch, Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline, Dunblane West and Crieff’s Macrosty Park as well as the Knock of Crieff.
Out west, there’s an event in Inverawe, plus one further north at Balmacara Woodland Park. In the North-East there are events at Mearns Academy, Cults, and Deeside Activity Park, while Nethy Bridge Primary School and the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore add extra orienteering in the highlands.
