Students success at Scottish Student Championships

In addition to the Junior Inter Areas, the second weekend of November also hosted the Scottish University Championships. Teams from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Aberdeen enjoyed a weekend of competition with relays at Scolty Woods on the Saturday and individuals at Cambus O’May on the Sunday.

The Edinburgh team was the largest with 24 competitors (including some JWOC athletes!), Stirling had 5 competitors, Glasgow 4 and Aberdeen had only 3 for the relays but their ranks grew in size to 8  for the individuals.

Part of the focus of the weekend was to give newcomers to orienteering a taste of competing and the fun of relays, as well as to meet other student orienteers.

Stirling take gold in relays

The relays consisted of a light green leg, followed by orange and finally a green leg. The racing was fast and furious with Tom Lines from EUOC completing the first leg in only 19 minutes, with others hot on his heels.  Stirling was to emerge the victors in the relays, with EUOC taking 2nd and 3rd places and Glasgow 4th.

1st          Stirling                Kieran Watts      Laura Hindle                     Douglas Lee

2nd         Edinburgh          Mairi Eades        Zoe Harding                      Matthew Leitch

3rd          Edinburgh          Ellie Bales           Lindsay Robertson          Noah Howlett

The points from the relays were EUOC 84, Stirling 48 and Glasgow 36. However a special award must go to Aberdeen, as Maria, their 1st leg runner was very new to the sport and this was her 1st time ever attempting a light green course.

Thanks to GRAMP and MAROC for organising

As always there are too many individuals to thank but everyone appreciates the efforts behind the scenes from GRAMP for organising the relays and to MAROC volunteers for making the individual events run smoothly.

Now time to get some more training runs in and prepare for BUCS!
