Lead Coach – Spring 2024 (Blended learning)

A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA (SCQF L7), the Lead Coach course builds on the Club Coach (Level 5) qualification developing the knowledge and skills to run a coaching programme and supervise other coaches. This replaces the old Level 2 course.
INTENDED FOR:
Competent orienteers with some coaching experience.
USUAL DURATION:
The Lead Coach course comprises some 80 hours study. This includes approx. 10 hours home study alongside 6 online tutor led sessions; 1.5 days of face-to-face tuition and formative assessment; further home study, written tasks & reflective practice supported by a mentor, finishing with a final half-day observed and assessed session. Learners have up to 2 years from the start of tuition to complete the qualification.
ASSESSMENT:
Written tasks and observation of practical coaching session by qualified assessor.
COST:

MORE INFORMATION:
The Lead Coach may work alone or co-ordinate a coaching team, within a club or group of clubs. A Lead Coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions. They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants.
A Lead Coach might mentor someone working towards a Club Coach qualification.
Lead Coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require an old Level 3 qualification.
PRE-REQUISITES:
- UKCC/SQCO Level 1 orienteering coach qualification or equivalent.
- Current member of British Orienteering
- Recent evidence of competence at TD5 usually in the form of competition result.
- PVG, CPWS & First Aid certificate commensurate with areas to be coached in are also required for licensing.
OTHER NOTES:
Qualification should normally be completed within 2 years
