Orienteering Edinburgh Route2WOC Series

Our Route2WOC series is running every week until the World Championships in July. You can join us every Thursday at midday and in the evening to get active and do something different with your lunch break or on the way home.

Currently, the series is based at the Festival Square (Lothian Road) until 11th July. This is our last series before the World Sprint Championships! You can pop along to as many events in the series as you wish.

We recommend signing up in advance or you can drop in between 12-1:30pm OR 4:30-6pm. If it’s your first time we recommend arriving before 12:30pm/5pm. These events are designed for beginners so don’t worry about having no prior knowledge or experience – there will be coaches on hand to get you started. We recommend bringing friends, colleagues or your whole office along!

What to expect at your first Orienteering Edinburgh Event?

Expect to be greeted by our friendly staff Heidi and Louise who will help get you started. To complete your orienteering course, you’ll be provided with a map outlining a specific route. Using this map, you’ll navigate between checkpoints, and reaching the correct checkpoint is confirmed by the presence of a checkpoint marker. There is no set route between the checkpoints – that is up to you! The MapRun app operates in the background, emitting a ping sound upon reaching each checkpoint and providing you with an overall time for your course.

Each week there will be two different course lengths: a short and a long. The short is around 4km and long is about 6 km. You can walk, jog, run or go at any pace you like! We also encourage you to participate in pairs or groups if you want to make it more sociable or feel like you need a second opinion from a friend when navigating the streets!

What should I bring?

Before attending your first Orienteering Edinburgh event:

We recommend signing up in advance as it helps us print the right amount of maps. We always endeavour to have some spare maps so you can still sign up on the day – but we would recommend coming early if this is your plan.

Please Bring:

  • Smart Phone
  • Clothing you’d wear to go for a typical run or walk around Edinburgh.
  • Waist belt or arm band (optional) – having a waist belt or armband to put your phone in whilst running or walking may be helpful
  • There is no need to bring a compass

How much does it cost?

It’s only £3 a go and free on your first time or if you bring a friend along for any event! Use code OEfriend when signing up.

Anything else I should know?

Please be courteous to other other people in the area. We will have someone trained in basic first aid with us on the day.

For regular orienteers – remember that some parts of Edinburgh are embargoed because of the World Orienteering Championships next year. Check out the embargoed areas and avoid them. The area for these events is adjacent to one of the areas but you have no need to go into the embargoed areas to take part in these events.

When entering our events, your name may appear in the results section of this website or in newspaper reports. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.
