New opportunity for WOC 2024 Project Lead

Come join our team and help us truly capitalise on the unique opportunity that hosting the World Orienteering Championships in Edinburgh in 2024 presents. We are looking for a self-motivated professional to lead on a 6month scoping project to create a project plan which outlines what could be accomplished and reflects the aspirations of the sport in creating an exciting development plan linked to WOC 2024. Join us as our WOC2024 Project Manager!

Are you the right person for the role?

Sprint orienteering – the sport’s most exciting discipline! It’s all about interpreting a complex map
and making quick decisions about the best route – and it’s all fast, very fast.

The World Sprint Orienteering Championships (WOC2024) are coming to Edinburgh in July 2024.
This will give us a priceless opportunity to promote orienteering to a wider audience and attract
more people to orienteer in Scotland and across the UK, with the excitement of the sprint format
proving particularly attractive to young people. We are determined to grasp this potential and
achieve a significant growth in numbers getting out there and enjoying orienteering as an exciting
sport for all, young people in particular.

We are looking to appoint a project lead to bring this to reality, through a mix of marketing, events, activities and competitions in the lead up to the WOC and going forward from there. This will initially be a fixed term contract of 6 months, with possibility of a contract extension (subject to funding) to see the project through the delivery phase.

Project Outcomes

We are looking for the right candidate to deliver :
 A detailed, targeted and costed publicity programme leading to greater awareness of
orienteering as a sport for young people and the opportunities offered by the WOC.
 The engagement of orienteering clubs, external partners and sponsors in promoting
orienteering through projects leading up to, and beyond, the championships.
 A costed and coordinated programme of events and activities that can be delivered by clubs
and partners across the UK during the following two years leading up to the WOC and
beyond.
 Identified opportunities of attracting additional resources for community and/or national
orienteering activities and plans to take advantage of such opportunities

Subject to achieving these outcomes, the project manager position will be continued for a further
period of two years to manage and deliver these plans.

The following skills/experience are required:
Essential:
 strong communication and networking skills and the ability to generate interest and
enthusiasm in a variety of different potential partners – orienteering clubs and members,
schools, local authorities (Active Schools/Outdoor Education), youth organisations, sponsors,
ambassadors (elite athletes)
 experience in scoping a coordinated and achievable project plan
 resident in Edinburgh or the surrounding area
 full driving licence

Desirable:
 some knowledge of orienteering
 marketing experience, particularly in sport
 experience in engaging and working with partners and attracting additional resources to
support projects

This post will not be involved in the staging of the World Championships, though there will of course be close links in the lead up to, and during the WOC. This is a joint project between the Scottish Orienteering Association and British Orienteering. As well as clubs across the UK, key partners within orienteering will be the WOC organising team and the development staff at SOA and British Orienteering.
The post will be home-working, but given the location of the WOC it is expected that the appointee will be based within a reasonable travelling distance of Edinburgh.

We are keen to speak to anyone with motivation to deliver on this role. Please send a CV and covering letter to outline your skills and experience to Fiona@scottish-orienteering.org. All expressions of interest must be received by Thursday 29th September at 5pm.

Salary £15,350 for a fixed term full-time contract of 6 months. We are willing to consider contractors or flexible working hours for the right candidate.

Should you wish to discuss this postition please contact Fiona@Scottish-orienteering.org
