A week of World Orienteering Day events kicked off on 15 May and in Edinburgh school children, pre-school children, a team from Active Scotland and even MSP Joe FitzPatrick, Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing, got involved.

World Orienteering Week runs from Wednesday 15^th May to Tuesday 21^st May and schools, clubs and groups across Scotland have registered “World Orienteering Day” events with the aim of breaking a world record and getting new people into the sport.

Last week the World School Championships in Orienteering took place in Otepaa, Estonia. The team had a fantastic week, with some really solid results that bode well for the future, especially as many of the youngsters are in the younger year of the 2-year age category.

To help us continue to grow the sport, the Scottish Orienteering Association needs the opinions of Scottish orienteers of all ages to help choose the best way to increase income from the sport. The 2019 British Orienteering Championships were a “tour de force” in Yorkshire for many of Scotland’s clubs and individuals, who headed south for championships based around Bradford, Leeds and the Yorkshire Dales.

The SOA Board have concluded that, to continue building the sport of orienteering in Scotland, we need to increase income to support the costs of running quality orienteering and we will be tabling a proposal to do this at the AGM. We realise this is a contentious subject and would like to get feedback from you beforehand.

Many Scottish orienteers are heading to Yorkshire this May Day weekend for the 2019 British Orienteering Championships.  Following the individual and team successes at the recent JK, hopes are high that Scots will feature prominently on the podium.

This year’s World Schools Championships in Orienteering (WSCO) is being held from 29 April – 5 May in Estonia. Scotland will be represented by a team of 15 athletes from throughout the country, and three coaches.
