Success for Scots at Muir of Dinnet British Night Champs
On a clear and beautiful starry evening the forests of Muir of Dinnet were alive with headtorches at the weekend, as close to 500 orienteers from across Britain participated in the British Night Championships.
Congratulations to all the MAROC volunteers and event organiser, John Musgrave, on a fantastic event. We heard lots of positive comments about the terrain and the organisation. Well done to all the medal winners and competitors, especially those who were back out making the SOL event a success the next morning!
Special mentions go to Graham Gristwood, for claiming his sixth British Night Championships win, and Devon’s Arthur Boyt, who came all the way north to claim the M80 class.
Update – 1 March 2019
Results of the British Night Championships have been updated, as explained by Jon Musgrave and Richard Oxlade:
“The organizer and controller have decided to revert to using the punched start times instead of listed start times because we recognise that there were some organisational problems for late starters.
“The distance to the start was incorrectly listed as 2km when it was in fact 2.3-2.4km and several competitors arrived late at the start. In hindsight we should have started late starters as soon as possible on the half minute but in practice the start team did their best to start them in the next available slot to avoid confusion at the punching start. Unfortunately this led to some delays on busy courses.
“In practice this change affects only a few places (notably the top 3 positions on W60L) but we recognise that some competitors may have felt rushed at the start and can only apologise if this affected anyone’s enjoyment of the event. “
